CORNWALL CRIMINAL DEFENCE LAWYER AVOCAT DE LA DÉFENSE PÉNALE

We defend clients on charges before all of Cornwall Ontario’s courts.

1. Main Cornwall Courthouse Organization

In Cornwall both the Superior Court of Justice (which hears serious criminal matters, all family matters, and all civil matters including small claims) and the Ontario Court of Justice (which hears less serious criminal matters and appeals of provincial offences) are co-located in a single modern downtown location about 10 minutes south of the highway.

Cornwall Courthouse Directions

Take the McConnell Exit # 792 from the Highway 401, drive south to 2nd Street, and turn right driving west to just past Pitt Street.

Cornwall Courthouse Parking

Very limited free parking is available at the courthouse, but you'll need to arrive very early in the morning to snag a space. While short term meter parking is available on street, because court times are unpredictable your best parking bet is in the municipal lot on the south side of Second Street just across from the courthouse.

Cornwall Courthouse Hours

Courthouse hours are 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with criminal remand and bail court often starting at 9 a.m., but plea and trial courts usually do not get going until 10 a.m.

Cornwall Courthouse Setup

There is currently no security screening of those entering the courthouse.

The entire courthouse is on one level. Walking through the main entrance, the Criminal Duty Counsel and Crown Attorney offices are to your right, as are Courtrooms #1 and #2 usually used for criminal remands, pleas, and bails. To your left you'll find the Family Duty Counsel office (& Family Legal Information Clinic), the court administration office with criminal, civil and family counters, larger courtrooms #3, #4, and #5 which are usually used for a variety Superior Court matters and occasionally for Ontario Court of Justice matters requiring a larger courtroom, smaller courtrooms #6 and #7 used mostly for OCJ trials, and courtrooms #8, #9 and #10 used for family, civil and criminal case conferences.

2. Cornwall Provincial Offences Courthouse

Cornwall has a separate provincial offences (POA) courthouse located a short two block walk directly south of the main courthouse. The POA court administration office and main courtroom are on the third floor. Ample free parking is available behind the courthouse, with the entrance being just west of Pitt St. off Water Street.

The court hears charges laid under provincial legislation, including highway traffic offences and municipal by-law offences. Justices of the Peace preside over the court, rather than judges (distinguishable by their green sashes, rather than the red sashes worn by the judges). They are addressed as "Your Worship" rather than the title "Your Honour" used for judges. You may also see Justice of the Peace presiding over bail and remandcourt for the Ontario Court of Justice in the main courthouse.

Provincial Offences fines can be paid at the third floor administration office.
